Hurricane Ian

Banner Image

Ian was my first real hurricane. Sept 28, 2022. Records say it was cat 4 when it made land just across the bay from our Cape Haze home. Local meteorologists say it was just barely Cat 5.

Looking out our front windows - hurricane proof (so they say) power had gone out and the storm was just beginning

The winds started getting stronger and more consistant. We had other storms that really delivered only a bit of wind and rain. This was the start of something spectacular.

The eye is headedright at us. The power had already dropped so i used a little tv and battery pack to get this over the air.

Suzi made a safe room for us. I preferred to stay in front of the front window to watch. Every other window was shielded, and thus shut.

I had this weird feeling that the world was gonna end soon and I wanted to watch. Kinda like when i got caught in the giant hailstorm st Sturgis.

Poor tree. I wanted to leave it be but Suzi made me cut it down.

Just this one, sad, tree

west side of house

East side of the house. Debri everywhere

Fencing totally destroyed

I guess this kind of privacy fence is meant to shatter. I would hate to be standing outside while that debri is flying.

view from inside fence

Birdcage is partially gone.

part of the structure is still there.

They were able to fix the rest without having to tear the good parts down

Another view from the back

One of our 3 giant live oak trees came down. :-(

Luckily it missed any buildings but trasked the fence and our garden.

I seriously wanted to preserve as much of it as possible and make it an ornament but Suzi said no! :-)

I used to hang my hammock on that tree.

we had to hire peole to cut and dispose of it. when i was younger i would cutt, stack and season it myself.

The shed was fine, i believe we put this in the garage, both cars were outside and faired great.

Behind the shed.

Much of garden under fallen tree. Esp a beautiful succulant garden that Suzi created!

Correction, one tiny damage spot to shed.

Pool is full of bad water!

2 days later it was sunny and warm. but no comm at all for 1 week, no elecricity for almost 3 weeks and no internet (other than cellular) for almost a month! The hard part was making sure Suzi's insulin stayed cold.

On closer examination some roof panels missing.

yep

Some just need resetting

ditto

This part looks ok. we had someone climb into the roof to be sure. The roof was ok but we have since had it replaced.

Thor has no idea what happened.

Thor knows things have changed. He is still processing it.

The pool is yucky

We start piling debri by the street

leaves blown everywhere

more panels in need of fixin

Amazingly, the house made it! Some of neighbors were not as lucky.

Despite being right under the eyewall path we had little home damage. It was mostly the lanai and the fence.

this is during our cleanup.

It was surreal in the sense that now we could see our neighbors back yards 4-5 houses down.

I was curious what the pool service would do.

Would they drain, clean, and refill the pool?

Nope, they just added chemicals and in a few days the pool was clean again.

2 days after armageddon it was beautiful! So I played guitar outside.

another good pic of the fallen oak!

Back of yard, along Greenway Ave

This was strange. but it still worked so i let it alone and Chi finally fixed it when he visited.

Some pix of the neighborhood. It loooked like a war zone. 4 years later there is still unfixed damage.
